Toronto Game Blog · Since 2016
Iron Mystic Empire is a Queen Street West writers' room turning long play sessions into sharp guides, lore deep-dives, and reviews you can actually trust. New longreads every Tuesday and Friday.
Our Story
We started as five friends arguing about turn order in a co-op board game. Ten years later we run one of Canada's most-cited independent game blogs — still opinionated, still playing everything ourselves.
Launched from a cramped apartment near Kensington Market, publishing strategy notes for the games nobody else was covering.
Took over a small studio at 337 Queen Street West, added a dedicated review rig, and started our weekly RPG lore column.
Introduced our transparent 40-point scoring rubric so readers see exactly why a game earns its verdict — no vague star ratings.
Crossed one million monthly readers while staying fully independent, reader-funded, and free of publisher-paid coverage.
What We Cover

We take 4X, grand strategy, and tactics games apart mechanic by mechanic — opening builds, economy curves, and the mid-game pivots that actually win matches. Every guide is play-tested for 20+ hours before it goes live.

What Readers Say
“The 4X opening guide bumped me from bronze to gold in a single weekend. It's the only site where the build orders actually match the current patch.”
“Their spoiler-tiered lore breakdowns are genius — I finally understood the Ashen Crown timeline without ruining my own playthrough.”
“I found three of my favourite indie games of the year through the Undiscovered shortlist. No other blog covers small studios this fairly.”
By The Numbers
Good To Know
Never. Iron Mystic Empire is reader-funded and fully independent. We buy most of the games we cover ourselves, and any review copy is clearly disclosed. Scores follow our public 40-point rubric with no exceptions.
We publish two flagship longreads every week — typically Tuesday and Friday mornings Eastern Time — plus shorter indie spotlights and patch-note updates throughout the week. Subscribers get an email digest each Sunday.
Absolutely. We work with freelance writers across Canada and beyond. Send a short pitch with a sample of your work to our contact email and our editors reply within five business days. Paid rates scale with word count and research depth.
Every lore article is split into clearly marked tiers: Tier 1 is spoiler-free context, Tier 2 covers mid-game reveals, and Tier 3 discusses endings. You choose how far to read, and each tier is collapsed by default so nothing is spoiled by accident.
Yes. Each strategy guide lists the game version it was tested on, and our team revisits popular guides after major balance patches. If a build order changes, we update the article and note the revision date at the top.
